"Here, sit down." Steve's side twinges in pain when he shifts on the bed, but he makes room for Bucky on the side of his hospital bed. There's chairs barely two steps away but for all Steve knows they might as well not exist. His world condensed down to the hand holding his and the face underneath his fingers.
He wants Bucky here within arm's reach. Needs to keep himself convinced this is real and not another goddamned dream. His worst dreams aren't the nightmares. It's waking up from the good ones. Steve nods ever so slightly in acknowledgement. Yes. He'll never stop going back for Bucky Barnes.
Never.
Though he narrows his eyes in clear confusion before Bucky makes his joke and it shocks a tiny smile out of Steve. Just the corner of his mouth but it's there all the same.
"Payback's fair for all th'rescuin you did the first twenty years of our lives, jerk." There was a time Steve could have passed for a dame if he tried hard enough but that was a time before Erskine. Before Captain America, and before The Winter Soldier.
"...You're a hero to me." Words so quiet but so sincere. Barely more than an exhale. "you survived."
