He hadn't been able to save Bucky on the train. Hadn't been able to keep his friends from becoming criminals when he did manage to save the former Winter Soldier. Had made everyone he cared about go off the grid and into hiding. Torn the Avengers apart.
He'll be damned if he lets some supernatural phenomena take away his friends here, too. Steve's done enough failing. It's time to start stepping up and doing whatever it takes for his friends and for the world at large. Every world.
"I can't go back home anymore. I lost a lot of people. Got several more hurt who shouldn't have been involved with my fights. When I heard the two of you were stuck in that....that place. And I wasn't able to bring you back or even go after you..." He ducks his head then.
"You're both important to me. So. Yes. I came all the way out here to make sure you're doing alright. To fight your fights with you. I don't want to lose anyone else."
